Summer is the season of fun and vacations; a time to take pause from our busy lives and get back to basics enjoying our families, friends and our beautiful planet.
Whether planning a home vacation, a road trip or expanding your horizons by air or sea, it is important to always be mindful of your surroundings and personal safety and make it part of your plan for you and your family.
Vacationers and tourists are equally vulnerable. Predators are proficient in spotting us and they can and will take full advantage of that opportunity.
If you're vacationing at home, be cautious when someone comes to your door. Criminals are doing team 'knock-knock' burglaries. If there is no response at your door, someone might break in through another door or window. Always answer it but don't open it. Be watchful going to and from your car, taking out your trash and doing other at-home tasks. Back yards are also hiding places for someone that is looking to break in your home. If you're going on an all-day adventure, make sure all doors and windows are securely locked. The statistics are scary – 60% of home invasions happen in the daylight hours.
Some of us will take a road trip whether it's to visit someone or simply to enjoy our beautiful country. Does your car have an emergency kit and multi-use flashlight for that 'just in case' emergency? Jumper cables, first aid supplies, ponchos, emergency blankets and miscellaneous auto tools are a necessity should you experience a flat tire or breakdown on the road, especially in remote areas.
Having a flashlight that has an emergency beacon, siren, seatbelt cutter and glass breaker is a necessary tool to have on your car console. Should you be in an accident, this tool could save your life. It's also a good idea to have one in your backpack if you're adventuring into the wilderness.
Whether you're doing an in-country or travelling abroad vacation consider your safety while in a motel or hotel. Having your own personal door and window alarm will alert you should someone try to gain entry.
Your personal safety and the safety of those you love is serious business. Consider a 'what if' situation and prepare for that 'just in case' by empowering you and every one you love with safety tools.
